This Friday 12/2 both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams play at Central with games beginning in both gyms at 4 PM. Girls’ varsity plays at 5:30 PM, followed by boys’ varsity at 7 PM. After the girls game at around 6:30 PM, there will be a short ceremony to remember Tyler Wessel and to raise awareness about the importance of Mental Health. In August 2021, Tyler Wessel took his own life after battling depression. A year removed it’s still surreal, and our memories of Tyler are vivid and the pain is still fresh. But we would like his legacy to live on in a way that benefits and serves others. Tyler’s parents Cindy and Ralf have the same wish. They will be in attendance on Friday and Cindy will again say a few words.

This year, we are partnering with C.H.A.D.S. Coalition and all proceeds will be donated to them. C.H.A.D.S. stands for Communities Healing Adolescent Depression and Suicide.

We hope that these efforts can bring attention to the importance of mental health. It is a giant understatement to say that this topic is hard to talk about. This is all the more reason that we are compelled to do so. Often we do not know the battles our students, players, or colleagues are fighting beneath the surface. We are hoping to play a part in empowering them to have open conversations about their mental health, and equipping them with resources to seek help. I recognize there are so many people in our school community who are already doing this in a big way.

The theme for the event is: Talk 4 Tyler: You’re Not Alone We are using the color green because it is associated with mental health awareness.
